Bed Bugs - IPM Indentification, Biology and Control
           Controlling Nuisance Ants with Pesticides

Presentation:    8:00 AM - 10:00 AM  * Eastern Time
                           2 credit hours

Course Description:

Bed Bugs – IPM Identification, Biology and Control

The common bed bug (Cimex lectularius) was almost completely eradicated from North America in the 1950’s due to mass treatments with insecticides. However, international travel has contributed to the resurgence of bed bugs in the U.S. Treating for bed bugs has become a steady area of business growth for the pest management industry. This is very different from the panic felt almost 20 years ago when PMPs were scrambling to find a control solution. We are learning from history that bed bugs are incredibly good at adapting to new situations. Research on the health impacts of bed bug infestations are ongoing and we will discuss how new findings could affect our industry. Successful treatment protocols are now based on the principles of IPM. We will discuss ways to overcome the struggles of bed bug resistance and customer compliance concerns. This presentation will focus on techniques that will effectively control bed bug infestations.
Controlling Nuisance Ants with Pesticides
This introduction to ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) is heavily geared toward familiarizing PMPs with all available tools used to control various pest ants. Students will briefly learn about key life history characteristics of common ants and how these can be used to effectively identify ants in the field. Students will then be introduced to the common ants found in urban environments, learn about their unique behaviors, and how these behaviors can be exploited to achieve control in an environmentally sound manner.
